If they can’t say it, they can’t write it! An oral language approach to improve writing.
Big Talk for Pre-Writers will focus on supporting children who are not yet writing. Big Talk can occur in Early Childhood settings, in the first few Primary School years, or through intervention. This is an essential first day in implementing Big Write & VCOP in the Early Years and to support pre-writers. It is an interactive PD and the whole day is broken up with numerous games and activities that can be differentiated to suit multiple learning abilities, and where oral language is the focus. You’ll leave confident and ready to support your pre-writers.
In this session you will:
· Take a detailed look at Early Years Development Stages, and how each are pre-requisites to reading and writing.
· Embed your new knowledge with hands on activity rotations that explore the importance of eye, arm, wrist, hand and finger muscle development.
· Learn how to help the students build their own VCOP boards (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) and enhance their oral language skills.
· Participate and run through how to integrate Big Talk into your sessions.
· Look at Pre-Writing Assessments, Warm Writes, Data Tracking and how the Australian Criterion Scale can help assess pre-writing and writing development.
· Finish with a final recap and a chance to collaborate and discuss implementation into your personal setting.
This is a full day professional development session suitable for Early Childhood Educators (Pre School to Year One), School Support Staff, Tutors, Home-School Educators, Special Needs Educators, or Educators with pre-writers in their class. We highly recommend that classroom support staff are involved in this session to fully support classroom implementation.

Matching to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers by AITSL
When you complete any professional learning to maintain your teaching accreditation, you have to record it with your state educational body and match the content against the national teaching standards by AITSL. As a rule, if a provider claims their course covers set standards, the course must focus at least 40 minutes of total course time to that focus. As we know with teaching and learning, more than one concept can be learnt at a time. So we have broken down our codes into two categories, major and minor.
Major, are standard descriptors we want to ensure underpin our course focus points, and we guarantee at least 1 hour of total course time is dedicated to covering these focus descriptors.
Minor, are standard descriptors we also firmly believe we cover through our course content and delivery, based on approximately 40 minutes of dedicated course time. However, they are covered through content delivery of the main focal standards.
Graduate
Major: 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.5.1, 2.5.1, 3.5.1
Minor: 3.4.1, 3.7.1, 4.1.1
Proficient
Major: 1.1.2, 1.2.2, 1.5.2, 2.5.2, 3.5.2
Minor: 3.4.2, 3.7.2, 4.1.2
Highly Accomplished
Major: 3.4.3
Minor: 4.1.3
These codes are just suggestions and it is the learner's choice which codes they write up in their PD logs. However, it is recommended to only focus on 5-6 codes per course.
