Big Talk for Pre-Writers

Time: 9:00am - 3:30pm
Cost: $270 per person (plus GST)


Big Talk for Pre-Writers will be capped capacity sessions and only running on select dates in 2018.
The focus will be on supporting children who are not yet writing. Big Talk can happen in Early Childhood settings, in the first few Primary School years, or through intervention.

About the session:
- Background and Research: What is Big Talk?
- A detailed look at Early Years Development, and how each are pre-requites to reading and writing.
- How to integrate Big Talk into your sessions.
- The Big Talk & VCOP process.
- Basic introduction to the Australian Criterion Scale for assessing writing development.
- Basic overview of Pre-Writing assessment, Warm Writes, and Data Tracking.

The first session focuses on the Early Years Development Stages and the importance they have preparing children to write. With support from Paediatric Occupational Therapists, rotations of activities allow educators to explore resources that support important eye, arm, wrist, and hand muscle development. 
The middle session is run as if the presenter was your classroom teacher so that attendees can get a real feel for how it will look throughout their classroom or educational setting, and how students will learn throughout this approach. This is an essential first day in implementing Big Write & VCOP in the Early Years and to support pre-writers.
The final session of the day will look at the criterion scales and how we can collect a Pre-Writing Assessment to begin tracking the student’s development. It will then look at them moving into Warm Writes once they are in a formal school setting and organising a student data tracker. The day will finish with a final recap and a chance to collaborate and discuss implementation into your personal setting. 

This is a full day professional development session suitable for Early Childhood Educators, (Pre-School to Mid Foundation), School Support Staff, or Educators with pre-writers in their class. The day will be broken up with new differentiated games and activities to take back to the classroom to support pre-writers. We highly recommend that classroom support staff are involved in this session to fully support classroom implementation. The whole day is broken up with numerous games and activities that can be differentiated to suit multiple learning abilities, and where oral language is the focus.
