What is Big Write and VCOP?
A Big Write is the chance for the students to celebrate their writing and show off the learning goals they have achieved for the week. They will learn how to up-level their work and create a ‘writer’s voice’ by using their VCOP skills (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation).
The session will focus on providing you with;
· Background and research of the approach.
· An overview of the Big Write week.
· A breakdown of the Big Write and VCOP Day– complete with a mini VCOP and Big Write Session, including self editing.
· Intensive analysis– Learn how to model Breakdown Buddies and highlighting.
Plus we’ll have a brief look at the Student Criterion Scale.
· You’ll learn how to assign a marking level using the Australian Criterion Scale and get overview of Cold/Warm Writes and Data Tracking.
This is a full day professional development session suitable for all year levels, leadership, and support staff.
We highly recommend that support staff are involved in this session to fully support classroom implementation. The whole day is broken up with numerous games and activities that can be differentiated to suit all year levels and abilities. The middle session is run as if the presenter was your classroom teacher, so that attendees can get a real feel for how it will look throughout their classroom, and how students’ will learn throughout this approach. This is an essential first day in implementing Big Write and VCOP into your classroom or school.

Matching to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers by AITSL
When you complete any professional learning to maintain your teaching accreditation, you have to record it with your state educational body and match the content against the national teaching standards by AITSL. As a rule, if a provider claims their course covers set standards, the course must focus at least 40 minutes of total course time to that focus. As we know with teaching and learning, more than one concept can be learnt at a time. So we have broken down our codes into two categories, major and minor.
Major, are standard descriptors we want to ensure underpin our course focus points, and we guarantee at least 1 hour of total course time is dedicated to covering these focus descriptors.
Minor, are standard descriptors we also firmly believe we cover through our course content and delivery, based on approximately 40 minutes of dedicated course time. However, they are covered through content delivery of the main focal standards.
Graduate
Major: 1.5.1, 2.5.1, 3.3.1, 3.5.1, 3.6.1, 5.2.1
Minor: 3.1.1, 3.4.1, 4.1.1, 5.5.1
Proficient
Major: 1.5.2, 2.5.2, 3.5.2, 3.6.2, 5.2.2
Minor: 3.1.2, 3.3.2, 3.4.2, 4.1.2, 5.1.2
Highly Accomplished
Major: 1.5.3, 2.5.3, 5.2.3
Minor: 3.1.3, 3.4.3, 4.1.3, 5.1.3
These codes are just suggestions and it is the learner's choice which codes they write up in their PD logs. However, it is recommended to only focus on 5-6 codes per course.
